Gear Hobbing Processing

Gear hobbing is a machining process used to cut gear teeth. The key steps involved in gear hobbing include:

1.Setting the rotating speed

2.Feeding the gear blank workpiece towards the rotating cutter

3.Repeating the process until all the teeth are completely formed

Different types of hobs can be used depending on the application requirement, such as:

-Spur

-Chamfer

-Roller

-Spine hobs

For specific gear types:

-In spur gear hobbing, the hob axis is set parallel to the axis of rotation of the gear blank workpiece.

-In helical teeth hobbing, the hob teeth are set over a specified angle.

-For worm gears, the hob teeth are set at the right angle to the gear blank workpiece.

Factors Affecting Cycle Time Calculation in Gear Hobbing Processing

The cycle time in gear hobbing processing is influenced by various factors including:

-Number of starts

-Number of gashes

-Hob diameter

-Number of cuts

-Cutting speed

-Feed

-Hobbing cycle

Moreover, these factors are affected by the module, number of teeth in the workpiece, stage of manufacturing, surface finish, gear quality, workpiece material, and hardness.

The cutting time for axial hobbing is calculated based on:

-Number of teeth in the workpiece

-Number of starts in the hob

-Hob RPM

-Feed per work revolution

-Approach

-Face or width of the stack of workpieces

-Hob overrun

Additionally, the hobbing cycle depends on workpiece configuration, work holding fixture design, hob size, and surface finish. Other considerations include machine selection, sourcing of workpiece, part inspection, material handling, and movement.
